Windy Point house wins AAA Cavalier Bremworth Design Award
Andrew Sexton Architecture from Wellington has won $3000 and a
Chris Metcalfe designed trophy as the Open winner of the 2008
Auckland Architectural Association Cavalier Bremworth Design
awards.
Head judge
Lawrence Nield, recently retired principal of leading Australian
architectural practice Bligh Voller Nield, praised the residential
house design for its succinctness and suitability for a small,
windy site in Wellington.
Nield, along with fellow judges Ivan Mercep, founding partner of
Jasmax, and Jeanette Budgett, lecturer at the UNITEC architecture
faculty, were impressed with the high quality of the entries. They
commented that some student entries were equally as impressive as
those from the open section.
Runner-up in the Open section was Mark Ritchie for his Vomo
Island spa resort.
The Student winner was Clinton Weaver, who won $2000 along with
a trophy for a project called Transformation; Material, Enclosure
and Raoul Island. Student runner-up was Finn Scott for a quarry
development. Five additional merit awards were given - three in the
Open section and two in the Student section.
The awards are for unbuilt architecture and this year saw a
massive jump in entries with the highest ever recorded in the 18
year history that Cavalier Bremworth has sponsored the awards. A
total of 90 entries were received - 30 in the open professional
section and 60 in the student section.
